Banxico Vacant Board Seat, First Female Supreme Court President Elected

MEXICO
  • Despite reports that a new nominee to the central bank board would be announced late last year, President AMLO has yet to nominate a replacement for Gerardo Esquivel, who’s term ended on December 31.
  • The Supreme Court has elected its first female president, who has pushed back against the government's nationalist energy agenda. By a 6-5 majority vote, the justices chose Norma Pina to head Mexico's highest court, putting in place a member appointed to the tribunal under the previous administration. (Reuters)
    • Pina has defended Mexico's transition to renewable energy, setting her against parts of a contentious electricity law championed by President AMLO that favors the country's state-run, fossil-fuel dependent energy firms.
  • Separately, the government announced that it is beginning work to modernize four Agreements for the Promotion and Protection of Investments (APPRI’s) with South Korea, China, India, and Switzerland.
    • It is just the start of a plan to overhaul most of Mexico’s existing APPRIs, many of which have technically expired, according to the Economy Ministry. (Mexico News Daily)
