Battle Among House Dems Continues This Morning As Mod Squad Hold Out

US

Following last night's failed efforts among the House Democratic caucus to get an agreement on proceeding with the budget resolution related to the Biden administration's USD3.5trn infrastructure package, the 'American Families Plan'.

  • Politico lays out the talks House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) - leader of the 10 moderate Democrats known as the 'Mod Squad' - had in an attempt to reach a deal: "[The deal] would essentially fold the budget vote into the roll call vote on the rule — basically, it would deem the budget as passed without having to hold a separate vote. In return for their support, moderates were offered the guarantee of a vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill by a deadline of Oct. 1."
  • After a bitter discussion last night, the House Democratic caucus convenes today at 0900ET (1400BST, 1500CET), with the majority of representatives voicing anger and outrage at the Mod Squad for risking the entire White House infra package in favour of the smaller USD1trn bipartisan deal.
  • The House leadership will then seek to hold a floor vote on the rule (with the budget resolution folded in ) at 1200ET (1700BST, 1800CET). At present it is not clear whether this vote will go ahead if the Mod Squad has not accepted the leadership's proposals (if 4 or more vote against, Pelosi's majority in the House is wiped out).
