BBG: M5S Minister Tries To Call Off Confidence Vote

Alessandro Speciale at Bloomberg tweets: "Latest twist in Italy's political drama: a Five Star minister is trying to call off the confidence vote, therefore averting the crisis. This might save the government for today & spare Conte from bringing down Draghi. But would the government be able to function in the future?"

  • The report from Speciale is at present unconfirmed. The debate on the confidence vote regarding the aid decree is ongoing in the Senate. The result had been expected at around 1200CET (0600ET, 1100BST).
  • Previously PM Mario Draghi had stated that the gov't would be dissolved if M5S abstained or voted against the decree. However, significant concerns among many deputies about potential for early election given M5S' poor polling numbers.
