Belgium Imported Record Russian LNG IN March

LNG

Belgium imported a record volume of Russian LNG in March despite EU efforts to find a way for member states to have the option to effectively ban Russian shipments of LNG without implementing new energy sanctions.

  • An EU proposal would give member governments the ability to temporarily prevent Russian exporters from up-front booking of infrastructure capacity needed for the shipments.
  • LNG imports from Yamal LNG into Belgium’s Zeebrugge terminal rose by 11% from the previous month according to ship-tracking data. The increase highlights the importance of Russian LNG but the increase was also impacted but the redirection of cargoes from French terminals that have been blocked due to industrial action.
  • There are currently no sanctions imposed on LNG imports from Russia with Belgium, Spain, and France key buyers.
  • European Union’s energy commissioner Kadri Simson last month said companies shouldn’t renew long-term contracts with Russia after expiry.
