Belgian PM Alexander De Croo has announced an investigation by the federal prosecutor's office into a potential network of Russian influence in the European Parliament involving alleged payments made to MEPs to spread Russian propaganda and push the Kremlin's messages.

  • De Croo claimed that “Cash payments did not take place in Belgium, but interference did,” The investigation comes after an earlier probe by Czech authorities into several MEPs and the news outlet 'Voice of Europe', resulting in sanctions being imposed on two individuals and the the outlet.
  • The investigation shares similarities with the 'Qatargate' cash-for-influence scandal in 2022 and will raise further questions regarding the scale of foreign influence on EU lawmakers.
