Biden Allies Seize On SCOTUS Immunity Ruling To Bolster Campaign

US

President Biden's campaign, and senior Democrats, have issued statements condemning the United States Supreme Court for ruling that former President Donald Trump should be granted partial immunity for offenses committed while in office.

  • The Biden-Harris campaign said: "...let's be very clear about what happened on January 6: Donald Trump snapped after he lost the 2020 election and encouraged a mob to overthrow the election... The American people already rejected [Trump's] self-obsessed quest for power once - Joe Biden will make sure they reject it for good in November."
  • House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) went further than the Biden campaign, which didn't explicitly call for action against the SCOTUS. He said House Democrats will, "engage in aggressive oversight and legislative activity with respect to the Supreme Court to ensure that the extreme, far-right justices in the majority are brought into compliance with the Constitution."
  • Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): "The Supreme Court placed itself on trial with this decision – and its credibility has been further diminished in the eyes of all those who believe in the rule of law.”
  • NYT notes that, in an interview with Fox News, Trump blamed Democrats for the prosecutions and said, “And now the courts have spoken.” He said he can now campaign freely.
  • The SCOTUS decision comes at an opportune time for the Biden campaign, allowing the White House to reframe the discourse away from Biden's disastrous debate performance and back onto defence of democracy - what it believes is the central issue of the election.
