Biden Backs New Elections In Venezuela

Reuters reporting that US President Joe Biden told reporters that, "he supports new election in Venezuela."

  • Biden comments come after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva said earlier today he won't recognise Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro unless he shows impartial evidence that he won the recent election.
  • David Luhnow at the WSJ notes that Lula's comment are, "an important step," and speculates that Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador or Colombian President Gustavo Petro could follow Lula's lead.
  • Stefano Pozzebon at CNNI reports on X that Petro's and Lula's foreign ministers are meeting right now in Bogota, Colombia, noting that Petro referred to new elections as, “the solution for Venezuela's impasse in the last hour.” Pozzebon adds that Petro’s and Biden’s comments are a, “clear sign that option is getting traction and diplomats are busy working around the phone.”
  • Reuters reported earlier today: "Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Thursday ruled out the possibility of holding a new election, amid an ongoing election dispute and after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva floated the idea."
