Biden Calls Putin War Criminal, Says Should Face War Crimes Trial

US-RUSSIA

US President Joe Biden has this morning called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to face a war crimes trial for the reported killing of innocent civilians in the towns of Bucha and Irpin on the outskirts of Kyiv that were brought to light over the weekend. Biden: "This guy is brutal and what's happening in Bucha is outrageous"

  • Wires also stating that Biden will seek to impose more sanctions on Russia following the revelations over the reported war crimes.
  • Caitlin Doornbos at Stars and Stripes tweets comments about potential Russian military activity from an unnamed US senior defence official (select comments below): " About 2/3 of the Russian troops around Kyiv and Chernihiv are leaving the area. Troops around Kharkiv may "want to move south and southeast toward Donbas...we are going to see them become more aggressive in the in the Donbas region. We can't independently confirm the reports of atrocities in Bucha...we have no reason whatsoever to refute the Ukrainian claims about these atrocities....Clearly, we would expect to see the reports coming out of Bucha to be investigated as part of that larger issue of war crimes."
US as well as other Western allies such as the UK are calling for Russia to be suspended from the UN Human Rights Council following the Bucha reports. There is some speculation about a similar move on the UN Security Council, but this could be vetoed by both Russia and China and is therefore a non-starter in terms of possibility.
