Biden Closes Gap To Trump In Swing State Polling

US

President Biden has made significant gains on former President Donald Trump in six of the seven 2024 swing states, according to a new survey from Bloomberg/Morning Consult. Bloomberg notes that the results mark Biden's “strongest position yet,” in their monthly survey.

  • An CNBC survey released today finds similarly: "46% of voters chose Trump and 45% picked Biden. Trump held a 48-42 lead in the December poll. Biden’s overall approval rating rose to 39% from 35% in December and his economic approval numbers rose to 37% from 33%."
  • The surveys may reflect a number of shifting dynamics which may have tilted the race back towards Biden. Firstly, with the economy and inflation receding as the primary concern for voters, one of Biden’s major political vulnerabilities has been mitigated.
  • Secondly, Biden has used a huge cash advantage over Trump to blanket swing states with television ads and backing it up with a multi-state tour.
  • Thirdly, Biden’s well received State of the Union Address in March may have countered some concerns over his age and mental acuity and brought back into focus the issues which helped deliver him the White House in 2020.
  • Lastly, Biden’s aggressive campaign to court the union vote may be bearing fruit in rust-belt states with endorsements from the UAW and United Steelworkers – two unions which could swing the vote in Michigan.
