Biden Expected To Announce Ukraine Military Aid Package Today

US-EU

US President Joe Biden is shortly expected to announce a new USD$750 million military aid package to Ukraine.

  • WAPO reports that the US package is to include 'heavy artillery, as well as Mi-17 helicopters, howitzer cannons, coastal defence drones, and protective suits to safeguard personnel in the event of a chemical, biological or nuclear attack.’
  • Follows an EU announcement of an additional €500m package.
  • The EU Council Statement reads: 'The EU will add €500 million to the resources already mobilised under the EPF for Ukraine, thereby tripling the initial budget to €1.5 billion.'
  • Both the US and EU military aid packages are in response to reports of Russian war crimes and to fortify Ukrainian defences against a fresh Russian offensive in the east of the country.
  • EU FM Josep Borrell: 'The next weeks will be decisive. As Russia prepares for an offensive on the East of Ukraine, it is crucial that we continue and step up our military support to Ukraine to defend its territory and population and prevent further suffering.'
