Biden On Israel-Palestine: No Going Back To Pre-Oct 6 Status Quo

SECURITY

President Biden, speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the latter's State Visit, has told reporters that, "Israel should align with the laws of war."

  • Biden continued: "Israel should do everything in its power to protect innocent civilians."
  • Biden's comments are his most overt warning against a heavy handed Israeli response in Gaza. His comments come a short time after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters that the Israeli Defence Force is "preparing for an invasion" of Gaza.
  • Biden: "We have to remember that Hamas does not represent the vast majority of Palestinians."
  • Biden repeats a statement he made at a campaign event earlier this week suggesting that Hamas' attack on Israel was carried out "due to progress of integration of Israel."
  • Biden says: "Israeli and Palestinians equally deserve to live side-by-side in safety, dignity, and peace. There's no going back to the status quo on Oct 6. That means ensuring that Hamas can no longer terrorize Israel... it also means, when this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next. In our view it has to be a two-state solution. It means a concentrated effort from all parties... to put us on a path to peace."
