Biden & Putin Exchange Warnings Over Ukraine, But Both Advocate Dialogue

  • Biden & Putin trade warnings over Ukraine following yesterday’s meeting, with Putin saying that new Western sanctions would be a “colossal mistake” and potentially sever ties completely.
    • The call lasted 50 mins and covered Ukraine, cyber security, Iran and bilateral relations. Both sides indicated support for diplomacy in the current stand-off and Putin was “pleased” overall with the talks.
    • Advisor Ushakov said Russia is looking for a concrete result in talks in Jan where separate discussions with the US, NATO & OSCE will be held.
    • Although both sides advocated diplomacy, no progress towards de-escalation was made
  • Markets closed due to New Years Holiday. Local markets will reopen on 10 Jan 2022.
