Biden Targets Union Vote In Detroit Amid Criticism Of Gaza Strategy

President Joe Biden will deliver remarks at a private campaign event in Detroit, Michigan today. Biden's appearance is intended to solidify the union vote in the wake of last week's endorsement from United Auto Workers boss Shaun Fain and head off discontent with amongst Michigan voters over Biden's unconditional support for Israel.

  • Biden won Michigan by a thin 154,000 margin in 2020 and the Arab community - amongst the largest in the country - may be crucial to Biden's chances of re-election in November.
  • The Washington Post reports: "Michigan’s Arab and Muslim community overwhelmingly supported Biden in 2020, and the loss of their support in significant numbers could complicate his chances of reelection. Biden has few, if any, paths to a second term without winning the state."
  • CNN notes: "Biden’s campaign has been struggling to find Arab American leaders who are even willing to meet with campaign officials. Multiple local leaders in Michigan declined invitations to meet with Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez..."
  • On the union vote, CNN reports that Biden, "met with Teamsters union leaders and workers in Washington on Wednesday as he tries to make inroads," with the vital voting bloc which endorsed candidates other than Trump in 2016 and 2020.
