Biden: There Is A "Full Blown Investigation" Into Pentagon Leak

US President Joe Biden has told reporters, after a tree planting ceremony with Irish President Michael Higgins in Dublin, Ireland, that "there is a full blown investigation into the leaked documents going on by the intelligence community and the Department of Justice," adding "we're getting close."

  • Biden stated he is "concerned that it happened," but "there's nothing contemporaneous that I'm aware of."
  • The Pentagon leak has threatened to drive a wedge between the US and key allies including South Korea whose main opposition party has stated that the White House should issue a formal apology to Seoul if the reports of US spying in the leaks prove true.
  • The leak has put ROK President Yoon Suk-yeol in a challenging position as he prepares for a state visit to Washington where he is expected to address a joint session of Congress.
  • Kyiv, although publicly dismissive of the severity of the leak, has also raised concerns with Washington. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal yesterday renewed calls for the US to provide advanced fighter plans to Kyiv as the Pentagon papers suggest Ukraine's air defences are vulnerable.
