Biden To Attend Detroit Picket Line "In Solidarity" With United Auto Workers

US

12:00 ET 17:00 BST: President Biden will today become the first sitting president to walk a picket line when he appears in Detroit "in solidarity" with striking United Auto Workers. The trip comes with significant political risk for Biden if his engagement with UAW fails to avert a prolonged strike or leads to an unfavourable deal for union workers.

  • Axios reports that Biden is likely to appear alongside UAW president Shawn Fain, who has spent the past week pressuring Biden to make the trip to Michigan, despite withholding an a formal endorsement of Biden.
  • White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to say if Biden supported any specific UAW demands but said Biden’s trip was unrelated to former President Trump's trip tomorrow: “Absolutely not. This is a decision to visit the picket line and it was based off his own desire. This is what the president wanted to do, to stand with auto workers.”
  • Biden and Trump making dueling trips to Detroit suggests that both campaigns see the swing state union vote as one of the central 2024 battle grounds.
