Biden To Deliver Remarks At White House Shortly

US

US President Joe Biden is shortly due to deliver remarks at a Medal of Honor Ceremony at the White House livestream. The remarks come amid intense press scrutiny over Biden's viability as the Democratic Party presidential nominee in light of widespread calls for him to drop out of the race.

  • At 18:30 ET 23:30 BST will meet Democratic governors, reportedly aggrieved that Biden hadn't personally reached out to them, to discuss Biden's strategy for remaining in the race.
  • Names floated as potential Biden replacements include Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD), Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL), and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY).
  • Of the above, Whitmer appears the logical choice. She is broadly popular and won re-election in Michigan, a state crucial to Democrats' chances of retaining the White House.
  • Governors likely have the most sway over Biden’s decision among elected officials, so any unified call for Biden to step aside will be difficult to brush off.
