Biden To Hold Call w/Qatar & Egypt After 'Progress Made' In Gaza Talks

MIDEAST

Following on from the joint statement issued by mediators in the Gaza ceasefire talks (see 'MIDEAST: Joint Statement Hits +ve Note; Offls Meet Next Week To Try & Reach Deal', 1526BST), US President Joe Biden is set to hold calls with Qatari and Egyptian leaders later today to discuss the progress of talks.

  • Barak Ravid writes, "We got more progress over the last two days than the last six weeks combined," a source with knowledge of the talks told Axios."
  • As Charles Lister at the Middle East Institute think tank writes on X: "Hard to know what to make of this [statement] -- there's no detail, but plenty of optimistic language. Netanyahu allies are less positive, blaming "blatant loopholes" & where does [Hamas political leader] Yahya Sinwar stand? Top line: does this mostly deter/delay/halt Iran/Hezbollah action?"
  • Calls made by the Qatari PM and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to Iranian leaders following the first day of talks were seen to have limited the prospect of an Iranian attack on Israel, at least in the short term (see 'MIDEAST: WaPo-Qatar Warns Iran Against Israel Strike During Gaza Talks', 1227BST).
