Biden To Speak On Breyer SCOTUS Retirement 1230ET

President Joe Biden is set to deliver remarks on the retirement of Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephern Breyer at 1230ET (1730GMT, 1830CET). The retirement of Breyer, put on the bench by then-President Bill Clinton in 1994, has been speculated upon for some months. Previously Biden had pledged that he would seek to put a black woman on the SCOTUS bench in the event a seat became open during his presidency.

  • Breyer sits as one of the three liberals on the nine-person bench, meaning that his replacement with another liberal will not alter the 6-3 split in favour of conservative justices in place presently.
