Blinken Holds Call w/Qatari PM Amid Concerns Of Regional Escalation

  • Confirmation of Blinken's call comes as US President Joe Biden holds a call with Jordan's King Abdullah II to discuss the regional situation and push for diplomatic intervention from Amman.
  • Senior Russian security council member and former defence minister Sergei Shoigu is in Tehran for talks with leading politicians including President Msoud Pezeshkian. Russia and Iran have cultivated increasingly-close security and military links in recent years, with the two countries believed to be on the verge of signing a wide-ranging cooperation agreement in the near future.
  • Blinken warned G7 partners over the weekend that an Iranian-led response to the killing of Hamas' political leader in Tehran last week could come as soon as today. Some form of retaliation is overwhelmingly likely, but it remains to be seen whether this is seen a escalatory or non-escalatory in scale.
