Bolsonaro: Petrobras To Announce Third Gasoline Price Reduction

BRAZIL

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has announced on twitter that state owned energy company Petrobras will reduce the price of gasoline tomorrow for the third time since June.

  • Bolsonaro: "From tomorrow, 16/08, Petrobras will reduce by R$ 0.18 the average price of sale of gasoline to distributors, from R$ 3.71 to R$ 3.53 a liter. - It's the third reduction announced in recent weeks. Soon we will have one of the cheapest "gasolines" in the world."
  • There has been suggestion this month that a USD$7 billion spending package to ease the burdens of inflation, announced by Bolsonaro, may have contributed to a tightening of the polling margin to favoured challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A Quaest poll last week showed Bolsonaro level with Lula in the most populous state of Sao Paulo a state which often act as a bellwether for general elections.
  • More recent polling, however, has suggested that the same trend is yet to emerge on a national level. A FSB poll released today shows Lula taking 58% of the vote in a hypothetical second round runoff to Bolsonaro's 42% - a one percentage point increase for Lula.
