Bolsonaro Closing On Lula In Polls

BRAZIL

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro has launched his campaign for re-election ahead of the November 2 presidential elections.

  • Bolsonaro's approval rating tanked in 2020/21 due to perceived mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic, rising inflation, and rising energy prices.
  • Most pollsters still give former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) a strong lead over Bolsonaro but a recent Datafolha report shows a significant narrowing of the margin since the previous polling data.
  • According to Datafolha Lula's lead has shrunk from 14 points to 7 points since December 21.
