Bolsonaro Fires New Petrobras CEO After Only 40 Days

BRAZIL
  • President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday dismissed Petrobras president Jose Mauro Coelho after only 40 days on the job and as pressure continues to mount from rising fuel costs.
    • It is reported the dismissal comes after the company refused to sell fuels at a discount to consumers warning it would lead to diesel shortages.
    • Bolsonaro also called for the election of a new board, according to a statement released close to midnight local time on Monday by the state-controlled company, opening the way to a full executive management shake-up.
  • He is to be succeeded by economy ministry official Caio Mario Paes de Andrade.
    • Paes de Andrade, the fourth CEO at Petrobras (PBR) in two years, previously advised Economy Minister Paulo Guedes on digital governance, and had been in the running for the CEO role in early April, when Coelho was selected.
