Bolsonaro Takes Aim at Fuel Prices as Public Support Wanes

  • According to Modalmais / Futura Inteligencia polling, leftist candidate Lula would beat the incumbent Bolsonaro in a head-to-head run off at the 2022 elections. The polling saw backing for Lula inch higher to 49.7% from 46.6% in the August poll, while Bolsonaro saw support drop to 35.5% from 37.4%.
  • The President remains on the campaign trail, with his regional tour seeing him put further pressure on lawmakers to drop tax rates on both diesel as well as cooking gas in an effort to put a lid on soaring energy prices. Inflation and cost of living remain a key roadblock for Bolsonaro's popularity ahead of next year's elections.
  • Brazilian lawmakers are also taking aim at fuel costs, with the Lower House speaker calling on Petrobras as well as regional governors to discuss methods and means to reduce the cost burden on consumers.
  • The Brazilian central bank's quarterly inflation report saw 2021 price forecasts revised significantly higher, with the BCB now seeing end-year inflation at 8.5% from 5.8% previously. 2022 projections were also nudged higher to 3.7% from a 3.5% prior. The forecasts were a formalization of the projections seen in the last CB minutes.
  • National unemployment rate data is due in 15 mins or so, seen dropping 0.2ppts to 13.9%.
