Boric To Name Marcel As Finance Minister, Expected To Boost Local Assets

CHILE
  • President-elect Gabriel Boric is set to announce current central bank president Mario Marcel to be his government’s Finance Minister, newspaper La Tercera reported last night.
  • La Tercera cited unidentified sources of the incoming administration and expect Boric to confirm the announcement at 9 a.m. local time. Marcel is expected to resign from his position at BCCh earlier in the day.
  • While a minor negative for the central bank, the news will be welcomed by Chilean assets that have come under significant pressure in the lead up and during the election cycle. Marcel is an experienced economist and a key architect of Chile’s conservative fiscal spending rule and the appointment confirms a more moderate Boric, boosting investor confidence.
  • JPMorgan have already noted that Marcel’s appointment would stoke a further rally in Chilean equities.
  • The focus will now turn to other appointments within the president-elect’s cabinet, particularly ministers of Interior, Mining, Energy and Labour.
