Borrell: Confident EU Members Will Approve Russia Sanctions Soon

Speaking after the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, states that the, "sanctions agreement should be reached before the end of this week."

  • Borrell continued saying he is "confident EU members will approve the next Russia sanctions package within next hours, or next days."
  • Ahead of the meeting, Borrell struck a more pessimistic tone, saying that, "I cannot assure [you] that we will have a final decision today on the 10th sanctions package against Russia."
  • The tenth tranche of EU sanctions on Russia, planned for adoption by February 24, are likely to focus on export controls and preventing sanctions evasion.
