Brazil Eager to Join OPEC: Minister

Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira told ministers of OPEC+ members that Brazil was eager to join the group following a technical review of its charter for cooperation, Reuters reported.

  • "It's all set. But there is a phase of detailed analysis by our technical team of the document we just received, which is part of the protocol in Brazil," Silveira said according to Reuters.
  • President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's office confirmed receipt of the invitation into the group during his trip to Saudi Arabia, but said he had not formally responded, Reuters said.
  • OPEC said in a statement that Brazil will join OPEC starting Jan. 1.
  • Brazil produces around 4.6m b/d of oil, of which 3.7m b/d is crude.
