BRAZIL: Lavrov Arrives In Brazil For Lula Meeting

RUSSIA

Wires reporting comments from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stating that he "wants the conflict in Ukraine to end as soon as possible," as he arrives in Brazil for a series of meeting with Brazilian officials.

  • Lavrov's trip comes in the wake of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's trip to China where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to stake out a neutral position on Ukraine and sought to firm up ties with fellow BRICS countries.
  • Lula's China trip received drew an irritated response from the West and Ukraine after the Brazilian President appeared to suggest that Ukraine and Russia were both responsible for the conflict.
  • ABC reports: "Critics have argued that Brazil's position on the Ukraine war aims to avoid confronting a key supplier of fertilizer for its soybean plantations, exports from which are largely destined for China."
  • Lavrov is scheduled to meet with Lula this afternoon.
