BRAZIL: President Lula To Speak With President Zelensky Today

UKRAINE

Reuters reporting that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will hold a call about a "peace deal" with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today at 13:00 ET 15:00 BRL 18:00 GMT.

  • The call will be the first between the two leaders and may further indicate that Lula is softening a position sympathetic to Russia.
  • Ahead of the Brazilian Presidential election last year, Lula told Time magazine: “I see the president of Ukraine... getting a standing ovation by all the [European] parliamentarians. This guy [Zelensky] is as responsible as Putin for the war.”
  • The Biden administration has attempted to nudge the Lula towards taking a first stance on Russia. A position which runs counter to Lula's historical distrust of the US but may have been aided by the violence which followed Lula's inauguration in January which drew messages of solidarity from the White House and mutual statements in support of Democratic institutions.
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira today at the G20 ministerial and thanked Vieira for, "Brazil’s support on the February 23 Ukraine resolution at the UN General Assembly."
