BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Second Smallest Rise in a Year

UK DATA

UK Total Retail Sales value stalled to +2.5% (vs +2.7% prior), and Like-For-Like Sales value to +2.6% (vs +2.8% prior).

  • Total Retail Sales remains below the 3-month average growth of +3.1%, and 12-month average growth of +4.2%.
  • The decline in the rate of sales growth was due to Total Non-Food Sales falling Y/Y in October, and in the three-months to October it fell -1.0% - below the 12-month average growth of +0.6%.
  • Meanwhile, Food Sales rose +7.9% over the three months to October (vs +7.44% prior), and remains the main contributor to sales growth, although Y/Y in October it remains below the 12-month average of +8.5%, which is likely due to food prices rising at a slower pace.
  • ONS retails sales grew +4.7% Y/Y in value-terms in September. The October BRC retail sales print implies that the ONS series is likely to continue falling from its peak in the next print.
