BRICS FM Meeting Later Today As India/SA Push For Vaccine Waiver

The BRICS group will hold a foreign ministers' summit later today, hosted virtually by Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. Meeting due to start at 0700ET/1200BST/1300CET.

  • A Russian foreign ministry statement said that "The (BRICS ministers) will exchange views on topical issues of international agenda, including regional conflicts, strengthening of international institutions, countering new challenges and threats, including COVID-19, as well as cooperation between the BRICS countries in the multilateral fora,"
  • The joint Indian-South African request at the WTO to have an IP waiver on COVID-19 vaccines is likely to be addressed in the group, as is the upcoming BRICS leaders summit due to take place in India later in the year.
