Business Long-Term Inflation Expectations At Pre-Pandemic Levels

  • The Atlanta Fed’s Business Inflation Expectations survey showed firms’ year-ahead expectations remained relatively unchanged at 2.4%, having plateaued at 2.4-2.5% since August.
  • It compares to pre-pandemic values centered around 2%, including a range of 1.8-2.0% through 2019. The relative difference is similar to trends seen in consumer surveys.
  • In the quarterly question, the average inflation expected over a 5-10Y horizon dipped another tenth to 2.8% for its lowest since Mar’21, having peaked at 3.5% in Jun’22.
  • This is closer to historical figures, with 2.7% averaged in 2019 and 2.8% since the survey started in 2012-19.
