Cabinet May Discuss Sweden NATO Bid Today

HUNGARY
  • The government will hold a meeting today where Sweden’s bid to join NATO is expected to be discussed among other issues. As reported yesterday, Prime Minister Orban’s cabinet may settle on a date for parliament to vote on ratifying Sweden’s effort to join the alliance. Foreign Minister Szijjarto said earlier that ratifying the bid is a mere formality after Turkey signalled readiness to do so Monday evening.
  • As Ukraine has received neither an invitation nor a timetable to join NATO until it meets all necessary conditions, the alliance has successfully avoided the threat of an escalation in the war, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said yesterday as reported by MTI. Speaking on the closing day of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Szijjarto hailed what he called a "win for responsibility", adding that Ukraine would have to make do with "a modest result relative to certain expectations".
  • Hungary has an "important and indispensable" role in NATO's newly adopted deterrence and defence plans, Defence Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky said as per MTI. He noted that Hungary had met the NATO 2% of GDP defence spending target this year and had allocated the same amount for next year.
  • There are no major data releases scheduled for the remainder of the week.
