Cabinet Reshuffle May Be On Cards

THAILAND

A Cabinet reshuffle may be on the cards, with some members of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) are lobbying for their leader to take the helm of the Ministry of Interior, the Bangkok Post reports.

  • The push for a Cabinet rejig comes from the need to fill some vacant ministerial seats. The Democrat Party is in talks with the Prime Minister after Niphon Bunyamanee resigned as Deputy Interior Minister, while the PPRP needs to allocate the portfolios of Deputy Agriculture Minister and Deputy Labour Minister, formerly held by Thamanat Prompow and Narumon Pinyosinwat. The Bhumjaithai Party has to fill the seat of Deputy Education Minister.
  • The PPRP reportedly sees these circumstances as an opportunity to replace unpopular Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda with its leader, although a Bangkok Post source said Prime Minister Prayuth is resisting those calls. The ministry's control over administrative resources may prove useful in the upcoming general election.
