Cabinet To Consider Options For BRICS Summit Including Co-Hosting Event With China

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Today's Cabinet meeting is expected to be devoted to the upcoming summit of BRICS leaders as South Africa is looking for a solution to the legal dilemma posed by an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Daily Maverick and BusinessDay reported that the Cabinet will consider co-hosting the summit with China, which is not party to the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court. According to the Daily Maverick, the inter-ministerial committee exploring the legal options around Putin's potential visit gave an adverse opinion about hosting Putin, while South Africa is already in talks with China about the proposal to co-host the summit. These reports come after Semafor Africa reported that taking the leaders' summit online was considered as an option to avoid hosting Putin in person.
  • Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor confirmed that a group of African leaders are preparing for their "road to peace" mission to Ukraine and Russia in mid-June. She said that she and her counterparts will be heading to both countries soon to set the scene for the subsequent visit by the heads of states. Pandor told reporters that the programme for the Ukraine visit is ready, while the the Russian one is still being finalised.
  • The Daily Maverick ran a piece flagging South Africa's efforts to counter the perception that it has taken an increasingly pro-Russia stance. This has seemingly factored into the internal debate on whether to host Russia's Vladimir Putin and the "road to peace" initiative. South Africa has recently launched a diplomatic charm offensive among G7 nation, but Western sources told the Daily Maverick that there has been some scepticism about Pretoria's intentions.
  • Eskom has managed to improve its generation performance and its energy availability factor (EAF) rose above 60% for the first time since August. Moneyweb have pointed to favourable seasonal conditions, which allow Eskom's fleet of coal-fired power stations to perform better.
