CAD vs AUD Net Shorts Smallest In Absolute Terms Since Nov

CANADA
  • CFTC positioning published late Friday showed CAD net shorts trimmed from -22% to -18% as of Jun 20, landing the day before strong Canadian retail sales helped spur a further shift lower in USDCAD.
  • Aside from the -17% of late May, this is the smallest in absolute terms since mid-March and before that December.
  • Compared with the -33% for AUD, the +15pps CAD-AUD differential is the highest since late Nov. It’s still not high by historical standards although the decline in AUDCAD has already overshot it when crudely comparing the two, potentially limiting further scope for the relative weakness play for more China-focused high beta majors.
