CANADA: Biden Departs On First Trip To Canada

US

President Biden will depart shortly for his first visit to Canada since assuming office 792 days ago.

  • Politico reports that Canadian politicians have been rankled by Biden’s percived neglect of his northern neighbour, writing today on Biden’s 26-hour visit: “The Canadians wanted more, but they're scoring an overnight POTUS stay — which the bromantic Barack Obama never delivered for his progressive pal to the north.”
  • CNN: "White House officials say the crowded agenda underscores the relationship’s importance – and the substantial shift away from the fractures that developed during former President Donald Trump’s time in office. Still, they acknowledge there are a series of economic, trade and immigration challenges that must be navigated between the two governments."
  • Biden will meet Governor General Mary Simon upon arrival and then attend a private gathering with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
  • On Friday, Biden will meet with Trudeau and members of his cabinet and deliver an address to parliament before giving a joint press conference with Trudeau.
  • Biden will be joined on the trip by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and Homeland Security Adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall.
