CANADA: Liberal Support For Trudeau Remains Unclear After Caucus Meeting

CANADA
  • Liberal members of Parliament gave unclear answers after a weekly caucus meeting about the the level of support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and what became of media reports about a petition for him to step aside.
  • Some TV networks aired a live shot of the door to the meeting room and afterwards Trudeau only said “The Liberal Party is strong and united.” He then went to Question Period as usual where he said the party is “totally united.”
  • None of the lawmakers who spoke on camera denied Trudeau is struggling to connect with voters and several likened the meeting to a healthy family discussion.
  • "I'm extremely proud of them airing things out in private and having a frank conversation that was really, was really truthful" Immigration Marc Miller said. "We still have some stuff to sort out, but I think it was a great conversation" he said, adding he's sure Trudeau will stay on.
  • "My message today was twofold," said Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. "The Prime Minister has to listen to the frustrations and in some cases, really valid frustrations of caucus colleagues, and incorporate that into changes... The second thing is my colleagues need to turn the knives outwards and not inwards."
