- “China is an increasingly disruptive global power,” Foreign Minister Melanie Joly says Wednesday
- “You need to be clear eyed. The decisions you take as businesspeople are your own” and “there are geopolitical risks linked to doing business” with China, she said
- “We will challenge China when we ought to, and we will cooperate with China when we must. Its sheer size and influence makes cooperation necessary to address the world’s existential pressures such as global health, nuclear nonproliferation, climate change”
- Joly said China is increasingly using its power to push values that diverge from international norms and from countries like Canada, which will “forge ahead with a strong, multi-dimensional approach to China”
- “We will also be adding a new national economic security lens on foreign investment in Canada, including in the critical mineral sectors,” she said, while pointing to trade opportunities with India food, energy, and tech
