Canada To Set Targets For Number Of Temporary Residents For First Time

CANADA

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller, speaking alongside Minister of Employment Randy Boissonnault in Ottawa, has confirmed that the Canadian government will place restrictions on the number of temporary residents in order to reach an "adequate volume" that "Canada can welcome.”

  • Miller: "Immigration accounts for the vast majority of our population and the labour force growth."
  • Miller: "Canada has seen a sharp increase in the volume of temporary residents in recent years from a rise of international students, to more foreign workers filling job vacancies, to those fleeing wars and natural disasters."
  • Miller: "Canada's future economic vibrancy depends on those we're bringing in today whether we like it or not... However changes are needed to make the system more efficient and more sustainable."
  • Miller says he plans to decrease the temporary resident population by five percent over the next three years and will convene a meeting of provincial, territorial and federal ministers in May ahead of releasing the first targets in September.
