Castillo, Fujimori Neck-And-Neck In Latest Presidential Poll

PERU

The latest opinion poll from Peru ahead of the 6 June presidential run-off election shows leftist Pedro Castillo and right-winger Keiko Fujimori neck-and-neck.

  • Presidential election poll (2nd round): Castillo (PL): 41,6 % (-3.3), Fujimori (FP): 41.5 % (+1.4), Undecided 15.7%.
    Datum, 25-27/05/21. 1,201 respondents.
  • Presidential election poll (2nd round, Don't knows excluded): Castillo (PL): 50.5 % (-2.7), Fujimori (FP): 49.5 % (+2.7), Datum, 25-27/05/21. 1,201 respondents.
  • A massacre of 14-18 individuals, attributed to the remnants of the Maoist-Marxist-Leninist Shining Path guerilla group could prove a turning point in the election.
  • Fujimori's father, Alberto, governed in the 1990s as the head of an authoritarian gov't. Many supported his brutal regime for defeating the Shining Path, which had killed thousands as part of a years-long insurgency. Associations between father and daughter could provide some more support for the Popular Force candidate from those concerned about the far-leftist group.
