CBS-US Officials Say Iran Retaliation Towards Israel Could Be Immminent

MIDEAST

CBS news reporting that "Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country." The expectation of an Iranian-organised attack on Israel or Israeli sites in the Middle East in response to a strike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus on 1 Apr has seen regional geopolitical tensions spike dramatically over the past two weeks.

  • Should an Iranian retaliation be forthcoming there will be significant focus on the nature of any action and its perpetrators. A missile or rocket attack from Iranian proxies in the region on Israeli-linked sites outside of Israel or on the Golan Heights could be seen as a lower-level retaliation, with less risks of sparking a major Israeli backlash.
  • However, a direct missile attack from Iran on Israeli cities would risk a significant conflagration. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu stated on 11 Apr that "Whoever harms us, we will harm them...We are prepared… both defensively and offensively."
