Central Bank Decision, Presidential Candidates Clash In Debate

  • According to 12 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg the BCCh is expected to raise its key rate by another 125bps to 4%; two are expecting a 100bps hike and one sees a 150bps increase.
  • Separately, Chile’s presidential candidates sparred over public safety, pensions and gender equality late on Monday during the final televised debate before this weekend’s runoff. (BBG)
  • In the last opportunity to shift the presidential race, both candidates said they would try to build larger coalitions and incorporate advisers from centrist political parties to ensure governability.
    • “Blows were exchanged, but a lot of major issues, such as climate change and education, weren’t even mentioned in the debate,” said Axel Callis, director of pollster Tuinfluyes.com. “The debate didn’t do much to convince undecided voters which could move the whole election one way or the other.”
