Centre-Right Retains Lead As Centre-Left, Five-Stars Battle One Another

ITALY

The centre-right coalition (CDX) remains on course to win the 25 September legislative election according to latest opinion polling. The right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI) remain the most popular party in the centre-right coalition by some margin. Despite speculation that others could seek the PM's office after the election, FdI leader Giorgia Meloni remains in pole position to take over from Mario Draghi.

  • Damaging the centre-left coalition's (CSX) prospects of keeping the right out of power is that its overall support has declined somewhat in late August and September as the populist Five-Star Movement (M5S) has recorded a minor recovery.
  • CSX and M5S unable to come to terms before the election on an alliance. These two forming an alliance after the election seen as the only chance of keeping CDX out of power. However, if they are only winning over support from one another, rather than CDX, it will only serve to strengthen the right's prospects of victory.
