Challenger Job Cuts Bounce And Not Just On Yellow Corp

US DATA
  • Challenger job cuts jumped from 23.7k to 75.2k in August for a 267% Y/Y increase after -8% Y/Y in July. It follows an average 163% Y/Y in Q2 and 390% Y/Y in Q1.
  • Warehousing is clearly the largest driver (jumping from just 50 to 32k) after Yellow Corp’s bankruptcy, something that will likely weigh on payrolls growth in tomorrow’s release. That said, even if you adjust for the ~30k job losses there, total job cut announcements would have still increased 120% Y/Y so the latest increase is more broad-based.
  • Tech cut announcements meanwhile saw their first Y/Y decline since Apr’22 (the 3.2k was -37% Y/Y) having heavily swayed overall cuts earlier in the year with extremely strong increases.
