UK: Chancellor Rishi Sunak expected in the Commons at around 1230BST (1330CET,
0730ET) to answer an Urgent Question from Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds on
the gov'ts COVID-19 economic package.
- Expected to provide some clarity on the future of the furlough scheme, which
is set to expire at the end of June.
- Speculation the rate of pay could be cut from 80% to 60% of furloughed
employee's wage, and maximum monthly payment (currently Stg.2,500) could be
reduced.
- Sunak facing mounting pressure from fiscal hawks in Conservative party on one
side concerned about cost of scheme to taxpayers, and unions on the other
arguing it is not safe for the majority of furloughed employees to return to
work.
