Chancellor Scholz To Travel To Saudi Arabia

GERMANY

A German government spokesperson has confirmed that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Saudi Arabia on Saturday September 24.

  • The meeting will be another step in the rehabilitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MbS) after a period of diplomatic isolation which followed the killing of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
    • MbS met Turkish President Recep Erdogan in June and US President Joe Biden in July.
  • German govt spox says that the killing of Khashoggi will be on the agenda but the main focus of meetings will be "germany as an investment location."
  • Intelligence firm Tactical Report has reported that the German govt may be preparing to lift export restrictions and soften a German arms export ban to Saudi Arabia.
