Chancellor's Language Hardens On More Payouts

Chancellor Rishi Sunak's language during the announcement of his Winter Economic Plan much changed from that earlier in the year at the March emergency budget.

  • "The responsibility for defeating coronavirus cannot be held by government alone, it is a collective responsibility shared by all because the cost is paid by all."
  • The Job Support Scheme comes around the middle of expectations, in offering a wider level of support in wage subsidies rather than targeted at hard-hit sectors, but not at a level as generous as some had called for.
  • No targeted payments towards industries hit by new COVID-19 restrictions (although VAT cut on hospitality maintained for an additional two and a half months), with hospitality, tourism, sport, and the arts all calling for major bailouts.
