Chicago PMI: Firms Facing Difficulties in Passing on Higher Costs

  • The July Chicago Business Barometer special question asked firms whether they are managing to pass the higher costs of doing business onto customers.
  • More firms were managing to pass on some of the higher costs to customers (54.8%). Only 25.8% answered yes in June, 12% less than in March. 12.9% were unable to pass on costs.
  • As inflation becomes more broad-based, manufacturers in the Chicago region are experiencing pushback from customers regarding increased charges.
  • Compared to March, around 12% fewer firms were able to pass on higher costs in July. Just over 6% more firms were however able to partially pass on inflationary effects.
