Chicago Survey Shows Continued Supply Chain Easing

US DATA
MNI (London)

The Chicago Business Barometer found significant easing in supply-chain pressures noted by respondents in September.

  • A total of 61.5% saw at least some easing in blockages. This left 35.9% not experiencing improvement, whilst a marginal 2.6% of surveyed firms were unaffected. This is a substantial improvement compared to past responses over the last ten months.
  • This is in line with the NY Fed global supply chain pressure index, which has eased by 66% off the December peak and continues to trend downwards.
  • In September, the Chicago PMI recorded the fourth consecutive month of new order contraction. Firms are now slowing their input demand as a result, which is relieving pressure on supply chains. As such, improved supply chains may mask slowing demand rather than improved global trade conditions.
