Chicago Schools Set to Reopen This Week

The Chicago Teacher’s Union has tentatively reached an agreement with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot which may break the deadlock between the CTU and City Hall and allow for in person teaching starting tomorrow.

  • The country’s third largest public school system has been closed for four days due to the risk presented by the surge in the Omicron Covid-19 variant. Concessions have been made on both sides to accommodate a return to in person learning.
  • The school closures have sparked bitter debates within Illinois and goes against government guidance to keep schools open. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden’s official stance remains: ‘Schools should be open across the country, that the mental health impact on kids of not having schools open is very harsh and hard, and [that] he does not want to see schools closed across the country.’
